For dogs with a damaged bowel mucosa, bowel ulceration, and true “leaky gut” syndrome, most – if not all – of the food antigens tested will be reactive. The gut must be treated symptomatically to heal before it can start to tolerate foods again. Therapies can include drugs and nutraceuticals such as metronidazole, tylocin powder, budesonide, clay, prebiotics, probiotics, slippery elm and digestive support. A bland diet should be fed.

When All 24 Foods are Reactive
This patient has a true “leaky gut” and all foods can be reactive. Suggest tapioca (cassava root = gluten-free starch), and trying: Chick peas (garbanzo beans), pinto or kidney beans, carrots, zucchini, spinach, green beans, but no peas or pea fiber, if Lentils are reactive), and blueberries, cranberries, pomegranates, avoid strawberries; apples, pears , bananas, and melons including watermelon. Then, if doing better, try adding tapioca or pumpkin flour. The dog may also be tolerate quail, pheasant, kangaroo, or emu.

Recipes When Some Meats or Fish are Non-Reactive
Suggestions for the diet would be to include only non-reactive meat or fish; vegetables and fruit, with the possible addition of tapioca (cassava root = gluten-free starch). Suggest trying the same foods listed above. If Beef is non-reactive, Buffalo and Bison should be acceptable. If Lamb is non-reactive, Goat should be OK (including Goat Milk & Yogurt).

Oils – When White-colored Fish and/or Salmon are Reactive
Sources of the important Omega-3 oils are: No menhaden, pollack, sardine or herring oil, if white-colored fish is reactive.
No salmon oil, if salmon is reactive.
Krill oil = ancient crustacean (but not with a shellfish allergy). Anchovy oil should be OK too.
Plant oils = olive oil, borage oil, sunflower oil, coconut oil (in moderation), primrose oil, moringa oil, but not canola oil.
